This collection consists of correspondence pertaining to Johnny Mercer's assumption of the debts of his father's company, G.A. Mercer Company, which failed in 1929. Chatham Savings & Loan Company of Savannah was the Liquidating Agent for the repayment; these papers are from the files of that company which was acquired by the Savannah Bank and Trust Company. These papers were presented to the Georgia Historical Society with the following comment: "a remarkable demonstration of a son's loyalty to his father." There are many letters written by Johnny Mercer in the collection. The later papers, 1970-1971, concern a few of his other charities. Three Christmas greeting cards are included with this collection.

Johnny Mercer (1910-1976) was born John H. Mercer in Savannah, Georgia, the son of George Anderson Mercer. He was educated in Savannah public schools and at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. He worked with his father in the real estate loan business before heading to New York in 1929 with the Savannah Town Theater group for a National Little Theater contest.
